The Association was founded in 1990 and is affiliated to the English Short Mat Bowling Association (ESMBA) and represents the county of West Sussex.

Membership of the Association is open to all clubs within the county subject only to acceptance of the Club constitution.   The fees are currently £25.00 plus £5.50 per member per annum.   This includes registration of the individual member with the ESMBA which enables them to compete in any competitions organised by the county and in any other competitions held under the auspices of the ESMBA or any affiliated body.

With new clubs forming and the occasional loss of a club, the The Association generally comprises of around 40 clubs and ranges between 850 and 1000 members each year.   It is run by a Management Committee, the Committee of which is elected each year at the AGM, which takes place in June and all member clubs may nominate candidates for the committee.   The committee meet approximately six times per year and member clubs may raise matters for consideration by the committee via the County Secretary.   In addition two Delegates Meetings are held each year at which each club is entitled to be represented by two delegates and at which the Management Committee updates the clubs on matters of interest and concern.   Delegates can also ask questions of members of the committee.

The Association runs an inter-club League and a Knock-Out Cup Competition over the season (September to April) and one day County Championship tournaments for the Champion of Champion, Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours plus a sponsored Mixed Pairs Competition and Over 60's Pairs and Triples Competitions.   In addition the Association also runs an Open Fours Charity Match and for those who play throughout the year it also runs three Open competitions during the summer.   The Association also runs, on behalf of the ESMBA, the qualifying heats for the National Championships and all registered members of the county may enter these.

The Association also enters a Premier and and 'A' Team in the ESMBA Inter County Competitions and a 'B' team also plays in friendly matches against local counties.   These competitive matches have now been enhanced with the addition of several Over 60's matches - again being played as friendly matches against other local counties.

All enquiries regarding membership of the Association, ESMBA or the Insurance scheme should be addressed to the County Secretary.
